Meet the neighborsof La Fortuna.

Small-group walks by day and after dark, led by naturalists who know which leaf the frog sleeps under.

Costa Rica · Arenal lowlands

Half a million species live here. We’ll help you find a few.

Most of the forest is hiding in plain sight. A trained eye turns a wall of green into frogs, sloths and birds.

Two walks

The forest works in shifts.

Day walk
08:00  /  13:002.5 hoursMax 8 guests

Morning light in the canopy, when birds are loudest and sloths come out to warm up. A slow walk with a spotting scope, stopping for whatever the forest shows us.

Often seen: three-toed sloths, keel-billed toucans, poison dart frogs, leafcutter ants, heliconias.

Night walk
17:302 hoursMax 8 guests

We head in at dusk with red-light torches, when the night residents wake up. Quieter, slower and full of eyes that shine back at you.

Often seen: red-eyed tree frogs, two-toed sloths, glass frogs, tarantulas, sleeping birds.

After dark

At six, the day shift clocks out.

Frogs start calling, sloths start moving and the leaves light up with things you would walk straight past in daylight.

Your guides

Born in La Fortuna. Trained to look closer.

Our guides grew up between the volcano and the river. They are certified naturalists who spot a frog by its call and a sloth by the way a branch bends.

Groups stay small so everyone gets a turn at the scope and nobody scares the wildlife off.

FAQ

Good questions

Yes. Trails are well known to our guides, groups are small, and everyone gets a flashlight. We keep a respectful distance from snakes and never handle wildlife.
